About the club
The Alwoodley Golf Club, on Wigton Lane in north Leeds, is a piece of golfing history. Opened in 1907, it was the first course Dr Alister MacKenzie ever designed, years before he went on to create Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne. His original layout survives largely unaltered, which is rare for a course of that age.
It is heathland golf at its best: springy fairways through heather and gorse, natural-looking bunkers and big, rolling greens that reward thought as much as strength. The course regularly features in the top 50 in Great Britain and Ireland and is ranked among the very best in Yorkshire.
Alwoodley is used to hosting serious amateur golf for men and women, and it is a memorable stop on the PING Junior Golf Tour for any junior in West Yorkshire and beyond. Come early and have a look at the clubhouse – the club is rightly proud of its MacKenzie heritage.
