About the club
Minchinhampton Golf Club is one of the best-known clubs in Gloucestershire, high on the Cotswold escarpment above Stroud. It has three courses: the Old Course out on Minchinhampton Common, and the two championship courses, the Avening and the Cherington, near the village of Avening.
The Avening and Cherington were laid out by Fred Hawtree in the 1970s and extended by his son Martin in 1995. Both sit on Cotswold brash, a free-draining limestone soil, which is why the club has a reputation for being playable and well presented all year round. The Cherington, generally regarded as the stronger of the two, opens with a 527-yard par five and rewards a well-placed drive rather than a long one.
The club has hosted Open Championship Regional Qualifying for the best part of two decades, along with national and county championships, so PJGT players get a proper taste of championship golf when the tour visits.
