About the club
Horsley Lodge Estate lies between Derby and Nottingham, about six miles north-east of Derby and signposted from both the A38 and the A6. The clubhouse sits high on the estate with wide views over rolling Derbyshire countryside towards the foothills of the Peak District, and there are hotel rooms and cottages on site, which makes it a practical stop for families travelling any distance.
The course was built in 1988 and opened in 1990 to a design by Bill White, then redesigned at the end of the decade by Peter McEvoy OBE, the former Walker Cup captain and World Amateur champion. It is a par 72 of 6,544 yards over 164 acres, and it was the first eighteen-hole course in the Midlands to be built to USGA specification – the greens remain its calling card and the reason it holds up so well in poor weather.
Two brooks form lakes and watercourses that are in play on most holes. McEvoy called the short 12th, Walnut, the best par three he had designed. A Roman road runs through the property, and stone from the ruins of Horsley Castle is built into the walls and tee structures.
